Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson has shared his admiration for the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy, calling it a tournament that creates “memories that last a lifetime.”

As the 2025 edition of the tournament moves into the knockout stage, Watson emphasized the significance of the competition in shaping cricketing careers. Reflecting on his own journey, he highlighted how the Champions Trophy played a crucial role in his development, from his debut in 2002 to winning the title in 2006 and 2009.
“The group stages have provided some excellent cricket, but it’s the knock-out matches that really count, and this week is going to be brilliant,” Watson remarked, underscoring the high stakes of the upcoming clashes.

Fond Memories of Pakistan
Watson, who never played for Australia in Pakistan during his international career, recalled his experience playing in the country for the Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2019. He described the overwhelming support and passion of Pakistani fans, noting how starved the country had been for elite cricket.
“I was caught up in the love and joy of cricket, and it echoes throughout the whole country,” he said, acknowledging the enthusiasm that has surrounded the Champions Trophy despite Pakistan’s performance.
Defining Moments in Champions Trophy History
Reflecting on his own career, Watson pinpointed the 2006 Champions Trophy as a turning point. Playing alongside legends like Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath, Ricky Ponting, and Brett Lee, he felt a newfound confidence after scoring an unbeaten 57 in the final against the West Indies.
“That win in 2006 was perhaps the biggest moment of my career. It proved to me that I belonged,” he said.
In 2009, Watson played a pivotal role in Australia’s triumph, particularly in the semi-final against England, where he scored 136* in a match-winning partnership with Ponting. He also recalled the iconic moment in the final against New Zealand, where he completed his century with a six to seal the title.
A Tournament of Legacy
Watson, who cherishes the memorabilia from those victories—including a special watch he received as the Man of the Match in the 2009 final—believes the Champions Trophy remains one of the most prestigious events in world cricket.
“The last two weeks have reminded us how special this tournament is, and I hope those who have featured in it will look back on it as fondly as I do now,” he concluded.
As the tournament heats up, Watson’s reflections serve as a testament to the impact of the Champions Trophy in shaping careers and creating moments that players cherish forever.
