Junior Hockey World Cup: Pakistan make impressive comeback against Netherlands
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: In a nail-biting match at the FIH Hockey Men’s Junior World Cup 2023 at Bukit Jalil National Hockey Stadium, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on Wednesday morning, Green Shirts prevented heavyweights Netherlands from defeating Pakistan. A 3-3 draw concluded the match after four quarters.
The young men of Pakistan put on an incredible show, with each of the three players—Arshad Liaqat, Sufian Khan, and Arbaz Ahmed—scoring one goal for the country at pivotal moments. Pakistan trailed the Netherlands by two goals at the half after the Dutch team scored field goals in the 21st and 30th minutes. Pakistan bravely battled back in the third quarter, cutting the lead with a field goal from midfielder Arshad Liaqat.
The turning point came in the 36th minute of the third quarter when Pakistan earned a penalty corner. Sufian Khan exhibited exceptional skills, slamming a drag-flick into the goalpost, leveling the score to 2-2. The Netherlands responded with a field goal in the 47th minute, once again taking the lead. However, Pakistan’s Arbaz Ahmed swiftly equalized with a penalty corner, bringing the score to an intense 3-3.
Both teams continued to play with incredible skill and tenacity, but neither was able to break the tie before the final siren. The exciting match concluded in a 3-3 draw, demonstrating the Junior World Hockey Cup’s spirit of competition.
