Jessica Pegula, the current world number three in women’s tennis, has criticized the organizers of the Madrid Open tournament after she and her doubles partner were not allowed to address the audience at the trophy ceremony. Jessica Pegula, along with her partner Coco Gauff, lost the women’s doubles final to Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia by a score of 6-1, 6-4 on May 7th. However, the men’s doubles finalists were allowed to give speeches after their match a day earlier.
Pegula spoke to reporters on May 9th ahead of the Italian Open, where she expressed her disappointment with the Madrid Open organization. She stated that she had a feeling that something like this might happen, but she never expected that they would not be allowed to speak. Pegula went on to say that she had never heard of such a thing happening in her life and questioned what century the organizers were living in when they made this decision.
Gauff also expressed her disappointment, stating that while she had no problem with not giving a speech, the issue was about the principle behind it. She believed that this should not happen again to future players and that it was important to give them the opportunity to speak at trophy ceremonies.
On the other hand, Victoria Azarenka, one of the players who beat Jessica Pegula and Gauff in the final, took to Twitter to express her frustration at not being allowed to speak. She stated that it was difficult to explain to her son why she was not given the opportunity to address the audience at the trophy ceremony.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media, with many people criticizing the Madrid Open organizers for their decision. Some have called for equal treatment of men’s and women’s players, while others have argued that it is unfair to deny any player the opportunity to speak at a trophy ceremony.
