TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN – Saturday, September 14, 2024 – The world of futsal converged on Central Asia today as the FIFA Futsal World Cup Uzbekistan 2024 officially began, marking a historic first for the region as it hosts a FIFA global tournament. The opening day was a vibrant celebration of culture and sport, setting the stage for 22 days of intense competition under the tournament’s thrilling tag line: “Masters of Speed.”1

A Celebration of Culture and Ambition

 

While the main draw had previously been a dazzling spectacle held at the UNESCO World Heritage site, Registan Square in Samarkand, the official opening of the tournament today focused on the competitive start and the host nation’s ambition.2

The build-up to the event was marked by a strong cultural push, including the unveiling of the mascot, Xon the Turanian Tiger, and a dedicated cultural performance at the draw featuring traditional Uzbek dance by the Navruz Dance Group and music celebrating the “Football Unites the World” theme.3 The tournament logo itself pays homage to the local culture, depicting the kalampir pepper often used in traditional Uzbek cuisine, cleverly shaped like the Futsal World Cup trophy.4

 

The event, utilizing venues in Tashkent, Bukhara, and Andijan, officially launched the 24-team tournament, which runs through the final on October 6.5

Elsewhere, five-time champions Brazil announced their intentions with a dominant victory over Cuba, while Paraguay secured a solid opening win against Concacaf opponents Costa Rica.
