Afghanistan secured their first-ever win against South Africa in international cricket, with Fazalhaq Farooqi and 18-year-old Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar delivering standout performances in a stunning display.

After South Africa won the toss and opted to bat, they were quickly put on the back foot by Farooqi’s brilliant opening spell. The left-arm pacer struck early, removing Reeza Hendricks and Aiden Markram with sharp deliveries coming around the wicket. Farooqi’s dominance continued as he dismissed Tony de Zorzi, leaving South Africa reeling.

Ghazanfar’s Spin Masterclass Topples South Africa’s Middle Order

Afghanistan’s young star, Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar, then took over, dismantling South Africa’s middle order. The teenage sensation struck in the same over to dismiss Tristan Stubbs and debutant Jason Smith, both for ducks. Ghazanfar’s magic continued as he claimed the key wicket of Kyle Verreynne, reducing South Africa to a perilous 29/5.

A run out soon followed, with Andile Phehlukwayo departing as the Proteas crumbled to 36/7.

Mulder’s Resilience Saves South Africa from Complete Collapse

Wiaan Mulder fought back for South Africa with a resilient half-century, while Bjorn Fortuin provided valuable support. Their efforts lifted South Africa to a modest total of 106, though they still faced an uphill battle to prevent Afghanistan from claiming a historic win.

Afghanistan’s Calm Chase Secures Momentous Triumph

Despite some early pressure from South Africa’s bowlers, Azmatullah Omarzai and Gulbadin Naib held firm, crafting an unbeaten fifth-wicket partnership to guide Afghanistan to victory. The historic triumph marked Afghanistan’s first win in six attempts against South Africa across formats.

This win is especially significant as Afghanistan had recently been bowled out for just 56 by South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. With this victory, Afghanistan now boasts wins against all major teams except India and Nepal (with only one match played) in at least one format.
