FIFA Prepares for Future World Cups with Paris Meetings

During the Paris Olympics, FIFA engaged in crucial discussions with future hosts of the men’s World Cup, including Saudi Arabia.

The bid process for the 2030 and 2034 World Cups is a significant milestone for the hosting nations. FIFA announced on Monday that it received formal bid books from leaders of the seven member federations exclusively bidding for these tournaments.

The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, along with three South American countries—Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, the latter being the inaugural 1930 host. Each of these countries will host one of the tournament’s 104 games.

Saudi Arabia is the sole candidate for the 2034 World Cup, a process that FIFA expedited last year.

FIFA’s 211 member federations are set to confirm these bids during an online meeting on December 11. Prior to this, the detailed World Cup project plans, encompassing stadiums, hotels, training fields, transport, and national security, will be published by FIFA later this week.

“FIFA will thoroughly assess the bid books and publish its evaluation report in the last quarter of the year,” the organization stated.

Bidders must also undergo a human rights obligations assessment, a policy introduced eight years ago. This policy was first applied to candidates for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The 2026 tournament, featuring 48 teams instead of 32, was awarded in 2018, defeating Morocco in a 134-65 vote.

Stay tuned for more updates on the future of the World Cup as FIFA moves forward with its assessment and planning processes.
