Djokovic Advances to Olympic Third Round with Victory Over Nadal

Novak Djokovic advanced to the third round of the men’s singles tennis tournament at the Olympic Games, defeating long-time rival Rafael Nadal in straight sets.

Seeking the only major title missing from his collection, Djokovic quickly won the opening set 6-1 at Roland Garros, a venue where Nadal has claimed 14 French Open titles. This match, potentially Nadal’s last on the Parisian clay, had fans hoping for a memorable finish.In their 60th meeting, Djokovic looked set to dominate after taking the first set, but Nadal rallied to level the score at 4-4 in the second set.

However, Djokovic regained control, winning 6-1, 6-4.Nadal’s quest for a second singles gold medal ended, but he continues in the men’s doubles with Carlos Alcaraz.

This is Djokovic’s fifth attempt to win Olympic gold, with his best result being a bronze in Beijing 2008. Entering as the top seed, Djokovic’s main competitor is reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion Alcaraz, who plays Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor later on Monday.

Djokovic will face the winner of the match between Germany’s Dominik Koepfer and Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
